Get Ready for the Celestial Spectacle of 2024: The Complete Solar Eclipse!
On April 8, 2024 Seneca Waterways Council will be at the heart of one of nature’s most captivating events. We’re talking about a total solar eclipse, where the moon will completely block out the sun, turning day into twilight and revealing the sun’s ethereal corona – a slight few are privileged to witness.
The Official Seneca Waterways Council Eclipse Patch
Congratulations to Lawren Monahan of Troop 133 in Spencerport, for designing the Seneca Waterways Council Eclipse Patch! Lawren’s design was chosen from a field of very creative designs submitted by Scouts from around the Council.

Just complete the requirements, and submit the completed form to your unit leader.

Pre-orders should be submitted by March 15, 2024. Patches can also be ordered after the eclipse.
Unit Events on Eclipse Day
Every unit is encouraged, recommended, implored, cajoled, exhorted, and even urged to hold an eclipse viewing event. Please, please, PLEASE consider holding an eclipse-viewing event. Nearly every school in the Council will be off on Eclipse Day. Some suggestions:
- Find and reserve a place to view the Eclipse
- Plan your program: The Seneca Waterways Eclipse Presentation will help teach the science needed to earn the Eclipse Patch – but not give away all the answers.
Eclipse Presentation: Power Point
- Invite non-Scouts to visit and participate: This is a perfect recruiting opportunity for your unit. Most kids will be off school, and they might be looking for an activity that day. Show off how great your unit is. And don’t forget to have your unit’s recruiting materials – including new member applications – ready to go.

- Plan pre-eclipse unit activities: The eclipse – and astronomy in general – is a great subject for unit meetings before the eclipse. For Scouts BSA, consider spending a meeting on the solar system and the eclipse – or find a counselor for Astronomy Merit Badge. And because we live in Upstate New York, find a counselor for Weather Merit Badge. For Cub Scouts, consider working on STEM NOVA awards – especially the Out of this World science module: https://www.scouting.org/stem-nova-awards/awards/cub-scout/
Phelps Community Eclipse Event – April 6 to 9
